Rabat – Morocco seized more than 1 tonne of cannabis resin in Martin, in northern Morocco on Friday, September 2.
Judicial police arrested three suspects for their alleged involvement in the case. The suspects are aged between 24 and 43, and all have criminal records.
A statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said the first suspect was caught red-handed with the cannabis shipment in Martil near Tetouan, northern morocco.
Investigations enabled security services to identify the two other suspects, who were subsequently arrested in Chefchaouen.
Collaboration between police and Royal Gendarmerie led to the identification of the location where the cannabis was concealed.
Police put the suspects in custody while awaiting the investigation to determine the circumstances of the case and to arrest potential accomplices.
The security operation is part of Morocco’s approach to fighting against drug trafficking.
Last year, DGSN services handled 82,950 cases related to the possession and trafficking of drugs.
During the same year, police seized 191 tonnes and 158 kilograms of cannabis, which is one of the most popular drugs in Morocco, and the rest of the world.
The cannabis seized in 2021 represents a decrease of 12% compared to 2020. Morocco’s illicit cannabis market is one of the largest in the world, estimated in 2017 to be worth $9 billion.
