Rabat – An average of 60% of Moroccan respondents in a new survey prefer locally-made products, while 20% prefer to buy foreign brands, and 20% say they have no specific preference.
Breaking down the popularity of Moroccan-made products by category, food and beverages seem to be the most popular, with 79% of respondents saying that they prefer Moroccan food and beverage brands to foreign ones.
Conducted by market research firm Sunergia, the survey further reveals that trust in Moroccan-made products varies widely depending on the product type. Moroccan-made beauty and skin-care products seem to be the least trusted, with only 45% of respondents saying that they trust Moroccan brands.
In addition to cosmetics and skin-care products, Moroccan fashion and accessories brands equally suffer from low approval rates, with only 48% of participants saying that they prefer Moroccan brands, a report from Sunergia indicates.
Survey data equally points out that age has a strong correlation with trust in the Made in Moroccco label; the older the population, the more likely they are to prefer Moroccan-made products.
Almost 83% of respondents aged 65 or more said they prefer locally made products. The average falls to 67% for people aged between 45 and 54, and sinks even lower to 34% among young people aged 18 to 24.
Aside from age, education and social background was also found to be decisive force impacting the attitude towards local brands. Survey data suggest that the less affluent a social group is, the more they are likely to prefer locally-made products.
Only 31% of respondents with college degrees said they prefer local brands, against 85% of respondents with primary education degrees.
To assess customer perception of Moroccan brands, the survey looked at data from 1,005 respondents. Data was collected between March 1, and March 25, 2022.
