Rabat – Moroccan-American rapper Karim Kharbouch, widely known by his stage name French Montana, received the Innovator Award for raising more than $226 million to support healthcare in Africa.

New-York-based NGO Pencils of Promise (PoP) honored the rapper last week during a gala after French Montana funded the Bundono Suubi “Hope” Health Center in Uganda. According to TMZ, the center primarily serves new mothers and their babies.

On Monday, French Montana shared his achievement on social media with the caption “Making more history for my people!”

“I’m grateful for PoP acknowledging my work in maternal healthcare in Africa,” the post reads. “Healthcare and education is a fundamental part of our human rights and should be accessible across the globe.”

The rapper noted that “PoP is doing groundbreaking work globally to keep kids in school and make sure they have a safe environment to learn.”

Born and raised in Morocco, French Montana migrated to the United States when he was 13. Despite his early departure from his home country, the rapper has maintained a strong attachment to his Moroccan and African roots.

In September, Kharbouch collaborated with French water customization atelier Skeleton Concept and designer Kevin Novitch to create a Rolex Daytona Skeleton watch with the colors of the Moroccan flag.

The rapper suggested the idea to the team with the objective of making an “intricate timepiece” that celebrates “his cultural roots.”

“Bringing the French Montana Concept to life with visionary Kevin Novitch has been both inspiring and rewarding, especially to now have a timepiece that symbolizes my country,” he detailed.
