Rabat – Antonio Lopez Isturiz White, a  member of the European Parliament, alerted the EU about Polisario’s recent threats against Morocco’s army.

The MEP sent a written question to High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, warning about Polisario’s threats and the collusion between the separatist group and Iran, asking the EU for “ information” on possible drone supplies to the Polisario Front.

“What concrete information does the Commission have on the Iranian drones being supplied to the Polisario Front?” the MEP asked, emphasizing the need for the EU to intervene to prevent the use of these drones and to prevent conflict escalation in the region.

“The use of this military hardware in Western Sahara represents a severe risk to the already fragile security and stability of the region and the Sahel,” the MEP said, warning that Iran’s infiltration in the region “poses a clear risk to the 1991 UN ceasefire agreement and jeopardises the peace process, the work of the UN mission to Western Sahara and the diplomatic efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy.”

The question to the EU came after Polisario threatened to use military drones against Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces in the Western Sahara defense wall.

In May 2018, Morocco cut ties with Iran, accusing its proxy Hezbollah of training and arming the Polisario Front, a separatist group claiming independence in Western Sahara.

In response to denial from both the Polisario Front and Iran, Morocco said it backed its decision with a comprehensive file and dataset documenting links between Hezbollah and the separatist front.

Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that it had sent Tehran the file documenting the collision.

Following the decision to cut ties with Iran, Bourita said in a series of interviews that the file contained data on Hezbollah senior officials visiting Algeria, dates, and venues of meetings with Polisario officials, as well as lists of names involved in those contacts.
