Rabat – Fuel prices will experience further increases, starting next week on Monday, October 17.
The price of diesel is expected to increase by MAD 1.60 per liter while gasoline will be up by MAD 0.70.
With the planned increases, the new price of a liter of diesel will reach almost MAD 16 while gasoline prices will exceed MAD 14.
According to Moroccan news outlet Le360, fuel stations across Morocco are set to experience further increases due to the cost of transportation.
The increases come amid a growing economic crisis, while citizens across Morocco have been taking to social networks to protest price increases of commodities, including fuel.
Some citizens continue to share posts under hashtags calling for fuel price decreases.
A viral online campaign also demands the resignation of Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch.
The planned increases in fuel prices follow recommendations from the Competition Council (a Moroccan market watchdog) which acknowledged the presence of a lack of political will to implement market reforms. The council said this could be the reason for the skyrocketing gas prices.
In response, the Moroccan government vowed to work on the majority of the council’s recommendations.
