Rabat – Moroccan athlete Soufiane El Bakkali was nominated by World Athletics for the Men’s World Athlete of the Year award.
Last July, the Moroccan athlete made history when he was crowned world champion in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in the World Athletics Championships held in Eugene, in the United States.
World Athletics is the international governing body in charge of managing national federations and organizing global international competitions in the sport of athletics.
Athletics experts from all over the globe were in charge of meticulously selecting the candidates.
The list displayed on the World Athletics’ website is composed of 10 nominees, including the Moroccan Athlete.
El Bakkali secured the nomination on the back of three achievements, namely: being the world 3,000 meter steeplechase champion, the Diamond League 3000 meter steeple champion, and his world-leading time of 7:58:28 during the fourth step of the Diamond League held in Rabat.
That performance was marked as the world’s best performance in the 3,000 meter category of the season.
According to World Athletics, the voting process for this year’s best athlete elections of 2022 will start this week and will end on October 31, the results will be made public in December.
The voting process will be divided into three categories, where the World Athletics Council’s vote will be worth 50% of the results, and the World Athletics Family’s votes and the fans’ votes will represent the other half.
Fans will have the opportunity to vote online, through the World Athletics social-media platforms.
