Rabat – Member of the fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly in New York highlighted the role of Sahrawi women in development in the Western Sahara region.
On this occasion, Regional Deputy Leila Dahi stressed that women play an ‘’important’’ role in the implementation of national policies for development, in accordance with the vision of king Mohammed VI for gender equality as a pillar of a modern state and a democratic society.
Dahi, who serves as the chairwoman of the Youth Caucus in the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) highlighted that “as in other regions of the Kingdom, women in the Moroccan Sahara play an active role in the representation of local populations and in the democratic management of their affairs through elected councils, within the framework of advanced regionalization.’’
She also highlighted that the legislative, regional and communal elections of September 2021 were marked by a massive participation of the inhabitants of the two regions (66%).
This mobilization demonstrates the attachment of the region’s populations to their Moroccan identity and to the future of the democratic process launched by the king, she concluded.
