Rabat – Morocco’s Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch, received the Crown Grand Duke of Luxembourg Prince Guillaume in Rabat on Tuesday, paving the way for improved economic relations between the two countries.

The meeting with Akhannouch is part of Prince Guillaume’s working visit to Morocco to hold talks with government members and senior officials. The prince is leading a delegation of businessmen representing companies from various sectors, according to a press release from the Moroccan government.

A number of high-profile officials were present at the Rabat meeting including Luxembourg’s Economy Minister Franz Fayot, and Moroccan Ambassador to Belgium and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Mohamed Ameur.

During the meeting, both parties expressed their desire to further develop trade and economic relations.

The visit especially aims to introduce Luxembourg companies to the various investment opportunities in Morocco, either directly through bilateral cooperation or through a multilateral framework between Morocco, Luxembourg, and Africa.

The delegation participated in a presentation delivered by Akhannouch highlighting Morocco’s capacity for hosting business activities.

Luxembourg first expressed its desire to boost economic relations with Rabat in 2019, following a meeting between former Moroccan Minister of Industry Moulay Hafid, and Luxembourg’s Deputy Prime Minister Etienne Schneider.

In the course of the meeting, Schneider said that his country “aspires  to make the port of Tangier Med its hub on the African continent.”

In 2021, Morocco and Luxembourg’s trade stood at $12 million (MAD 130 million), while Morocco’s exports to the European country reached $6 million (MAD 65 million).

In addition to economic cooperation, the two countries equally seek to form a mutual vision to address regional and international issues, as well as cooperate to address the rising risk of terrorism in the region.
