Rabat – The Arab League summit commended the role of the Al Quds Committee, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI. The committee focuses on the protection of Jerusalem’s cultural heritage and status of the region, as well as advocating for the rights of women and children.
The summit commended the efforts of the committee in its final statement dubbed the “Algiers Declaration,” issued at the end of the Arab League summit held in Algiers from November 1-2.
The statement emphasized the role of the committee’s initiatives from a report made by Secretary-General of the Arab League of States Ahmed Abou El Gheit.
The initiative includes the financing of 10 schools in Jerusalem in addition to Morocco’s humanitarian aid directed to Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Gaza strip.
The report also emphasized the engagement of Morocco and the US for facilitating the opening of the Allenby crossing between Jordan and the occupied West Bank.
In July, Morocco was among the active parties that helped to facilitate dialogue between Jordan and Israel to allow the permanent opening of the crossing over the Jordanian river.
Israel’s Minister of Transportation Merav Michaeli thanked Morocco and the US for their efforts in facilitating dialogue.
“I thank US President Joe Biden, King Mohammed VI, and the Kingdom of Morocco for their continued commitment and efforts to promote peace and prosperity in the Middle East,” the minister said.
Morocco has frequently expressed support for the Palestinian cause, stressing that its decision to re-establish relations with Israel will never affect its firm stance with regards to Palestine.
Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita renewed Morocco’s determination to continue to support for the Palestinian cause during his recent interview with Sky News Arabia on the sidelines of the Arab League summit.
“Morocco believes that the Palestinian cause needs to set strategic goals. Dealing with the cause is not a business. It is the fate of people, a case for the whole Arab nation,” Bourita said, stressing that ties with Israel will not change “Morocco’s firm positions.”
