Rabat – With the help of Morocco’s General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST), Spain’s national police arrested on Tuesday a jihadist who planned to commit an extremist attack in the city of Murcia on Friday, which marked Remembrance Day in the country.
The DGST had alerted Spanish authorities about the presence of a “very extremist” individual in the European country.
Spanish anti-terrorism agents then carried out an investigation, whereby they monitored the suspect’s movements, mainly on the internet.
The suspect has allegedly consumed “violent and propaganda material of a jihadist nature,” indicated Spanish authorities in a statement. He also “continuously shared a large amount of material with extremist jihadist content on his social media.”
In addition, the suspect had expressed his “desire to die as a martyr” on Remembrance Day, also known as Armistice Day. The memorial day is commemorated every year on November 11 to mark the end of World War I.

Following the suspect’s arrest, Spanish authorities searched his home in the town of Blanca and seized electronic devices, phones, and documents containing content that incites violence and promotes an extremist ideology.
The seized material also proved to Spanish authorities his involvement with terrorist organizations and indoctrination, added the statement.
The suspect was then placed in the custody of the head of the Central Court, who ordered his pretrial detention.
The suspect’s arrest came following an investigation which was launched in February 2022, after Spain’s National Police received “accurate information” from the Moroccan DGST regarding the matter, concluded the statement.
The operation was carried out in collaboration with Spain’s National Police and the country’s National Intelligence Center.
