Rabat – Morocco international Yassine Bounou could be set for a return to European football after his impressive FIFA 2026 World Cup campaign reportedly caught the attention of Turkish powerhouse Fenerbahçe.
According to Turkish outlet Fanatik, as relayed by French publication Foot Mercato, the Istanbul club has identified Bounou as one of its priority targets as it prepares for the possible departure of first-choice goalkeeper Ederson.
The reported interest comes after another strong tournament from the Atlas Lions goalkeeper, who once again established himself among the competition’s standout performers.
Bounou played a pivotal role in Morocco’s run to the quarterfinals, producing a string of decisive saves throughout the tournament.
He denied Kylian Mbappé from the penalty spot in Morocco’s quarterfinal defeat to France and also stopped penalties against the Netherlands in the Round of 32.
His performances earned widespread praise from opponents, including France goalkeeper Mike Maignan, who described Bounou as “a top goalkeeper” after the two sides met in the quarterfinals.
According to Foot Mercato, Fenerbahçe now see the Moroccan international as an ideal replacement should Ederson leave the club this summer.
However, completing the deal may prove difficult. Bounou remains under contract with Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal until 2028 and has become one of the club’s most important players since joining from Sevilla.
A return to Europe would also see the Moroccan goalkeeper return to continental competition after winning the UEFA Europa League twice during his successful spell with Sevilla.
If the transfer materializes, Bounou would reunite with fellow Moroccan international Sofyan Amrabat, who recently returned to Fenerbahçe following a loan spell, while also sharing the dressing room with several high-profile players.
Neither Fenerbahçe nor Al Hilal has publicly commented on the reported interest.
