German Energy-Focused Company Invests in UK-Morocco Xlinks Marine Cable

Rabat – Conenergy, a German energy-focused consultancy, and service company, announced on Monday that is investing in the Moroccan-British power project that would deliver green energy from Morocco to the UK through the Xlinks marine cable.

A statement from Conenergy explains that it is “entering into a financial and strategic partnership to work together on Xlinks’ plans to supply the UK exclusively with renewable energy from Morocco via four 3,800 kilometer submarine HVDC –high-voltage, direct current– cables.”

The Xlinks Morocco-UK Power Project is a 10-gigawatt green energy project that is set to be the largest project of its kind in the world. The cable is expected to transmit 3.6 gigawatts of sustainable wind and solar energy from Morocco to the UK for an average of 20 hours a day.
Xlinks would have the capacity to provide electricity to seven million UK homes by 2030 – enough to meet around 8% of the country’s electricity needs.

Commenting on the news, Xlinks Project Leader and CEO of Ground Maintenance Simon Morrish said: “We look forward to working with Conenergy, who bring their sustainability-oriented, solution-oriented approach to the energy world.”

“We are also particularly pleased to welcome founder and CEO Roman Dudenhausen and his team to the Xlinks investor family,” Morrish added, explaining that the investment “demonstrates the growing confidence of the markets and our industry in the project and the benefits it will bring.”

The project is being led by distinguished UK energy experts, engineers, and contractors.

In addition to Morrish who is a serial founder, the Chairman of the board is Sir Dave Lewis, former CEO of Tesco and President of Global Personal Care at Unilever. CEO of Ground Control Nigel Williams, whose company was responsible for installing the world’s longest underwater interconnector, the North Sea Link, is the project leader.

Conenergy’s CEO Roman Dudenhausen said that his company has been eyeing the Xlinks for a long time. “It is bold, innovative, and sustainable,” he declared.

Dudenhausen called the project “a game changer on the way to a green, secure, and independent European energy system.”

“Of course, we are very happy to be a financial and strategic partner for Xlinks and his team,” he added. “Further joint projects are already being discussed.”
