Rabat – Morocco’s head coach Walid Regragui has called up Anass Zaroury to replace Moroccan international football player Amine Harit during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Morocco’s Royal Football Federation (FRMF) confirmed on Wednesday that Zaroury will replace Harit, who was seriously injured on Sunday, just a week before the inauguration of the World Cup. Zaroury, 22, has played for several Belgium’s national youth teams.
He made his international debut in 2017 with the U-17 team. He also played for the U-18, U-19, and U-21 squads over the following four years.
Since September, the winger has been playing for England’s Championship club Burnley, where he imposed himself as one of the main players. He scored eight goals and delivered two assists for the club this season.
Harit, 25, incurred his injury at the 58th minute of last Sunday’s game between Monaco and Marseille, after coming into contact with Axel Disasi.
Harit was poised to play his second World Cup in a row after his first participation the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. But the injury has shattered his chances of participating in the competition.
His injury came as a shock for Morocco’s head coach Walid Regragui, as well as for the millions of Moroccans fans, who were pinning their hope in seeing Harit help his national team achieve a remarkable performance in the World Cup.
