Rabat – The first regional meeting dedicated to the development of an implementation plan of the Arab regional strategy to fight terrorism started in Rabat on Thursday.
The headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted the meeting, which is running for two days and seeks to discuss measures to prevent terrorism in the region.
The meeting also examines other related topics, including the use of internet and online technologies for terrorism, Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
It is also set to examine issues such as foreign terrorist fighters, border security, and international cooperation to combat crime.
The meeting comes following the Arab Summit in Algiers, where leaders called for taking advantage of Morocco’s experience in the field of counter-terrorism.
The Arab regional strategy to fight terrorism was approved in March 2022 by the Council of Arab Ministers of Interior.
In addition to security and intelligence partnerships with regional and international allies, Morocco also employes deradicalization and moderation tactics in its fight against terrorism and religious extremism.
In 2017, Morocco launched the “Moussalaha” (reconciliation) program, with the aim of helping terrorism convicts reintegrate into society by deradicalizing them.
In May, Morocco hosted the Ministerial Meeting of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS in Marrakech, signaling to the country’s counter-terrorism credentials.
