Rabat – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres visited the archaeological site of Volubilis near Meknes on Wednesday.

The visit came on the sidelines of Guterres’ visit to Fez to take part in the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations Global Forum in Fez.

Guterres was accompanied by permanent representative of Morocco to the UN Omar Hilale during the visit. The UN Chief also wrote a message of congratulations in the site’s guestbook, describing it as an “admirable demonstration of the meeting of civilizations.”

Following the visit to Volubilis, Guterres went to Rabat where he was received by King Mohammed VI.

The UNAOC Global Forum was held in Fez on the 22nd and 23rd of November, and sought to promote intercultural and interreligious dialogue, as well as examine pathways to global peace amid several global crises.

The diplomat praised the city for its historical and cultural landscape, which played a crucial role in its selection as the host for the forum.

Volubilis was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997. The site is known for its mosaics, which date back to the 2nd and 3rd century and are inspired by Greco-Roman mythology.

In 2022, the US Embassy in Morocco announced a $189,000 project to preserve the mosaics at the site.
