Rabat – Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Nasser Bourita, received on Monday for the first time the recently appointed US Ambassador to Morocco, Puneet Talwar, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rabat.
Commenting on the meeting with Bourita, the US Ambassador said: “Thank you Ministere des Affaires Etrangeres for your warm welcome today at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, my first visit to the MFA as Ambassador.”
“FM Bourita and I had an excellent discussion about how we can strengthen the already strong ties between Morocco and the United States,” he added.
Puneet Talwar officially assumed his duties on November 15, according to the US embassy in Rabat.
Talwar had said that “it is a great honor” for him to be the new US ambassador to Morocco, adding that he “looks forward to working every day to strengthen” the partnership with one of the US’ “oldest friends and the first country to recognize the independence of the United States of America.”
Morocco and the US share a long-standing partnership spanning a wide range of fields including security, and trade among others. In the first half of 2022, the United States became the largest foreign investor in Morocco overtaking France for the first time in over a decade.
Morocco welcomed MAD 6.3 billion ($578 million) in investments from the US in the first half of 2022, against MAD 5.6 billion ($513.7 million) from France.
In addition to focusing on boosting economic ties, the two countries are engaged in a number of bilateral and multilateral security cooperation agreements on counterterrorism.
