Rabat – Police in the northern Moroccan city of Tetouan arrested on Friday three people aged between 19 and 21 on charges of spreading misinformation about migration online and inciting people to attempt irregular migration to Europe.
In online publications promoting irregular migration, the suspects offered to help social media users succeed in their attempts to cross to Europe from Morocco, said a statement from Morocco’s General Directorate for National Security (DGSN).
According to the statement, the Tetouan police department arrested the three individuals after establishing links between them and online publications claiming to be able to help would-be irregular migrants slip through Moroccan border security.
The three have been placed in custody while authorities continue to investigate their posts and social networks to identify potential accomplices and assess the extent of the suspects’ network in Morocco and abroad.
The arrest and the continued investigation are part of Morocco’s efforts to curb illegal migration and fight against human trafficking networks.
