Rabat – Argentina defeated France 4-2 on penalties after a 3-3 draw on Sunday winning its third World Cup trophy.
Argentina’s team started the game by attacking fearlessly and creating several opportunities to score, although France’s defense and keeper Hugo Lloris stood in the way of a goal.
A penalty kick was awarded to Argentina at the 23rd minute after Angel di Maria was challenged by France’s Ousmane Dembele. Footballing star Lionel Messi converted the penalty, putting his team in the lead.
Di Maria widened the lead with a goal in the 36th minute after taking a pass from Alexis Mac Allister in a quick counterattack.
The first half continued with a display of dominance from Argentina’s side, with a usually formidable French team looking out of depth.
The result remained the same throughout much of the second half, until French star Kylian Mbappe brought France back in the game by scoring a penalty kick in the 80th minute.
Mbappe scored a second only one minute later, equalizing the score for Les Blues.
Extra time began with both teams creating strong chances, but it was Messi who scored the winning goal for Argentina at the 109th minute.
Mbappe equalized the score again with a penalty kick at the 118th minute.
The game progressed to a penalty shootout, where Argentina managed to defeat their French counterparts 4-2.
Despite an early loss to Saudi Arabia, Argentina went on to defeat Mexico and Poland to qualify to the round of 16.
Messi and co were then able to eliminate Australia in the round of 16, the Netherlands in the quarter finals, and Croatia in the semi-finals.
On the other hand, France comfortably qualified to the knockout stages after two wins against Australia and Denmark, although they lost 1-0 to Tunisia in their final group stage game.
They defeated Poland in the first knockout rounds, before beating England in the quarter-finals, and finally defeating Morocco 2-0 in the semi-finals.
