Rabat – Morocco’s Atlas Lions’ have received international messages of congratulations and encouragement following their historic win against Spain yesterday in the round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup.
Joining in on the celebrations commending the efforts of the Moroccan team, Arab Princesses and Queens have shared supportive words on social media platforms.
Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, wife of the former Emir of Qatar Hamad Ben Khalifa, posted a picture on Instagram where she was dressed in Morocco’s symbolic red, applauding Morocco’s Atlas Lions. The caption read, “Congratulations to the Moroccan team for qualifying for the quarter-finals.”
Also joining the chorus of supportive voices celebrating the impressive Moroccan team is Queen Consort of Jordan Rania Al Abdullah. “Moroccoooo. The Atlas Lions you made us happy, Wow! #Morocco you did it again,” she wrote on Twitter.
Following their mother’s lead, Sheikha Moza’s daughter, Sheikha Al Mayassa Bint Hamad-al Thani chose to extend her message of congratulations to “Arabs and to Africa” in an Instagram post. The royal daughter especially highlighted the fact that Morocco is the first Arab and the fourth African country to make it to the quarter-finals.
In her other social media posts celebrating the Atlas Lions, the made extensive use of the words “Sir, Sir, Sir.” Meaning “Go, Go, Go,” the Darija (Moroccan Arabic) term has proved to be the Moroccan team’s most loved motivating chant at the Qatar World Cup.
The princess also memorialized Achraf Hakimi’s winning penalty shoot against Spain. “The final goal that made history,” she said in a caption.
There have also been many messages of support and congratulations from other royals and public figures, such as the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and King Mohammed VI.
The Moroccan monarch was seen last night driving in Rabat’s chaotic and enthusiastic celebrations; the moment was captured and shared in what became a viral video.
