Rabat – Heavy rainfall is expected to hit several provinces across Morocco on Monday and Tuesday.
The Moroccan General Directorate of Meteorology (DMN) predicted between 20 and 35 millimeters of rainfall which is expected to hit El Jadida, Safi, and Essaouira on Monday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The amber level alert also forecasts between 40 and 80 millimeters of rainfall for Chefchaouen Larache, Ouezzane, and Sidi Kacem from Monday at 6 p.m. until 12 p.m. on Tuesday.
Rainfall between 30 and 50 millimeters is forecast in the provinces of Fahs-Anjra, Tangier-Assilah, Taounate, Tetouan, and Kenitra on Monday and Tuesday.
Morocco has already witnessed significant downpours this week. The rainfall hit several provinces, including Rabat, Temara, and Sale.
The much-needed rainfall came at a time when the North African country has been suffering from the severest drought in the last three decades.
The drought affected the agriculture sector, one of the key pillars of Morocco’s economy.
Agriculture contributed to the country’s GDP by 11.68% in 2020.
Due to drought, Morocco’s cereal production decreased by 67% in the 2021-2022 agricultural season compared to the previous season.
Morocco’s production reached only 34 million quintals in the previous season compared to 103.2 million quintals.
