Rabat – Amid a Moroccan youth development strategy, 49 volunteers from the US Peace Corps are helping to promote peace, and friendship in several towns across Morocco.
US ambassador to Morocco Puneet Talwar chaired swearing in the ceremony on Saturday, marking the completion of the volunteers’ 11 weeks of “intensive language and cultural training” in Beni Mellal, 228 kilometers from Rabat, the US embassy said.
“Thank you to all 49 of you, who have made the bold decision to volunteer the next two years of your lives, immersing yourselves in a local community in Morocco and deepening the already strong people-to-people ties between our two countries,” Talwar said in the ceremony.

He recalled that many volunteers waited over two years to arrive in Morocco to serve the communities, thanking them for their dedication.
He also thanked the Governor of Beni Mellal province El Khatib Lehbil, and representatives of the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, who attended the ceremony, for the Moroccan government’s “continued support for the Peace Corps program.”
The US embassy hailed Morocco’s efforts in receiving volunteers, emphasizing that the North African country was one of the first countries that allowed volunteers to access the country in 1963 two years after President Kennedy established the Peace Corps.
Over 225,000 US citizens have served as Peace Corps volunteers across the globe, including more than 5,000 who served in Morocco.
“The Kingdom remains one of the most requested service destinations for volunteers. The volunteers are aged between 21 and 60 and come from across the United States, reflecting the country’s diversity,” the US embassy said.
