Rabat – Speaker of Yemen’s House of Representatives Sultan Said al-Burkani reaffirmed his country’s support of Morocco’s territorial integrity and the country’s sovereignty over the Sahara on Monday.
“Our position concerning the question of the Sahara and its Moroccanness is firm, much like the integrity of Yemen is absolute and not up for compromise,” al-Burkani said in Rabat.
The Yemeni politician made the comments while visiting Morocco as the head of a parliamentary delegation. During the visit, al-Burkani met with his Moroccan counterpart Rachid Talbi Alami.
The Yemeni delegate also expressed thanks to the Moroccan government and people for its support to Yemen during the latter’s struggles.
Al-Burkani added that the two countries will work to improve on their parliamentary ties and cooperation, expressing a desire to take advantage of the Moroccan parliament’s “expertise and capacities.”
Yemen is part of a growing chorus of countries that have expressed support for Morocco’s position in the Western Sahara dispute.
The country has benefited from Moroccan support as it has continued to be embroiled in a conflict between the Saudi-led coalition and Houthi rebels, which had led to a humanitarian crisis including a famine.
In 2021, Morocco announced a $1 million donation to Yemen to help tackle the ongoing war’s effects on Yemeni citizens.
