Rabat – Morocco’s Directorate General of Meteorology (DGM) issued a new warning that a cold snap will continue to sweep through several regions in Morocco from Sunday to Thursday.
According to the orange-level warning, temperatures are set to drop to a range of -8 to 3 degrees Celsius across some Moroccan provinces next week.
Provinces hit the hardest by the cold snap are set to see low temperatures ranging between -8 and -3 degrees Celsius and maximum temperatures ranging between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius. The list of provinces includes Ifrane, Taza, Sefrou, Boulemane, Beni Mellal, Azilal, Khenifra, Al Haouz, Midelt, and Tinghir.
Meanwhile, the DGM includes a second list of provinces set to experience a less severe drop in temperatures of between -3 and 3 degrees Celsius and maximum temperatures between 9 and 14 Celsius. The list includes Chefchaouen, Al Hoceima, Guercif, Jerrada, Oujda-Angad, Taourirt, Figuig, El Hajeb, Fez, Moulay Yacoub, Taounate, Meknes, Khemisset, Khouribga, Chichaoua, Zagora, Ouarzazate, Errachidia, Tata and Taroudant.
This year’s cold and rainfall come as a pleasant change in Morocco after the severe drought that gripped the country in 2022.
Last year’s drought significantly affected the country’s rain-fall-dependent agriculture and deepened Morocco’s reliance on food imports. In addition, the drought triggered wildfires that resulted in human casualties and damage to private property.
Drought also affected the country’s already dwindling water resources, as national dams reached record-low levels.
