Rabat – Israel’s raid on Jenin has provoked new escalations between Israel and Palestinian resistance groups, with Palestinian armed groups firing rockets into Israel and Israeli forces responding with air raids on Gaza.
The Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement claimed two of its rocket attacks were intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome system. Following the rockets’ launch, Israel carried out air attacks in Gaza on sites it said were used by Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
Armed groups in Gaza called for a state of high alert following an Israeli raid on Jenin in the occupied West Bank that left ten Palestinians dead on Thursday.
Hundreds of Palestinians have also taken part in protests to condemn what they describe as a “massacre” and a “new Israeli crime.”
The past year has seen tensions escalate in the conflict, as Israel not only carried out military operations in Gaza, but also several raids in the West Bank.
The killing of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, raids and Islamophobic rallies in the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and a visit by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir to the mosque have stoked tensions over the past months.
The return of Benjamin Netanyahu as the head of a new far-right government has also been met with mounting fears over the future of the tensions between Israel and Palestine.
Palestinians seem to be ready to protest Israel’s actions. Following the Jenin raids, protestors set tires on fire near the fence separating Gaza from Israel in a symbolic act against the killings.
The Israeli attack was met with criticism from across the Arab World. A Moroccan official condemned it on Friday, warning of an increase of hostility between Palestine and Israel if these “unacceptable practices” persist.
