Rabat – Morocco’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Omar Kadiri, has said that King Mohammed VI closely follows all developments concerning the Palestinian cause and never ceases to emphasize the need to preserve Jerusalem’s legal, historical, civilizational, religious, and demographic status.

Kadiri made the remarks on the sidelines of the Security Council’s open debate on “the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question,” which was held on January 18 in New York.

Al-Quds appeal

Citing King Mohammed VI’s initiatives aimed at supporting the Palestinian cause on the international stage, Kadiri recalled the Al-Quds appeal agreement, which King Mohammed VI and Pope Francis signed in March 2019.

Recognizing the “uniqueness and the sacred character of Jerusalem”  and “its spiritual significance,” the appeal aims to protect the historical city as a “shared heritage of humankind.”

It also stresses the importance of allowing the followers of all three monotheistic religions free access to religious sites, as well as the right to practice their faith.

The UN representative shed light on the important role of the Al-Quds Committee, which is chaired by the Moroccan monarch, while stressing that the committee and Bayt Mal Al-Quds Agency’s joint efforts are aimed at supporting Palestinians.

Kadiri explained, “Since its establishment in 1995, the agency has implemented concrete educational, social, economic, health, and cultural projects with the goal of improving the living conditions of Palestinians.”

Founded by King Hassan II, the agency focuses on socio-economic development of Al-Quds and the preservation of local Islamic cultural heritage.

The agency reportedly provided development aid worth $64 million between 2000 and 2022 to various sectors in Jerusalem.

Kadiri also highlighted King Mohammed VI’s major role in the reopening of the Allenby Bridge in July 2022.

“This initiative has had a positive impact on the daily life of Palestinians and has facilitated the movement of people and goods,” he explained.

Emphasizing the Palestinian cause’s importance to the international community, Kadiri noted that “the region’s stability and prosperity are dependent on a just and lasting solution to this issue, within the framework of international law and relevant Security Council resolutions.”
