Morocco’s Airport Authority Warns of Disturbances in Flights to France

Rabat – Morocco’s National Airport Office (ONDA) has warned of disturbances to flight schedules linking Morocco and France, in light of strikes in the European country.

“Due to social movements in France, flights to and From France will see disturbances starting on January 19, 2023,” the ONDA said on Twitter. “We request that you check the status of your flight with the airline before going to the airport.”

Morocco’s flagship carrier Royal Air Maroc had canceled flights to and from France on January 19-20, adding that it will provide a rescheduling option through its website.

The announcement came following reports of a national strike  in France. Thousands of workers took to the streets across the European country on January 19 to protest government plans to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64.

French air carrier Air France announced in a press release that all airlines are set to reduce their schedules to and from Paris Orly by 20%, as air traffic controllers stated that they will only provide “minimum services.”

Other services such as schools and public transport have also been affected by the strikes.

Meanwhile, over 100 public figures in France have signed a plea from French outlet Politis to oppose French President Emmanuel Macron’s reforms, accusing him of “imposing” reforms on the country that the population does not want.

In addition to striking, workers in several French cities took to the streets to push back against the proposal, with thousands gathering in cities such as Paris and Marseille.

Macron’s government says the increase is the only way to keep the pension system functional in a country where everyone receives a state pension, and where the working population is aging.
