Rabat – Morocco’s Islamic Affairs Minister Ahmed Toufiq has said that his ministry allocated an annual fund of MAD 104 million ($10.2 million) to support associations dedicated to the religious guidance of Moroccans living abroad.
These funds will be used to build, renovate, and equip mosques as well as to strengthen the religious guidance within them.
Toufiq made the statement on the sidelines of a plenary session of oral questions at the parliament on January 16, reported Morocco’s news agency (MAP).
The minister highlighted that an annual fund of MAD 104 million ($10.2 million) was allocated in 2022 to 18 different associations dedicated to the religious guidance of the Moroccan community abroad.
Toufiq stressed that the religious guidance of the Moroccan community living abroad is a priority to Morocco’s Supreme Council of Ulemas (Muslim scholars).
He also highlighted that the ministry has worked to establish channels of communication and cooperation with official bodies, specifically with the Kingdom’s embassies and consulates as an official interlocutor for the authorities in charge of managing religious affairs.
Last month, King Mohammed VI ordered a four-year gradual increase in the monthly allowance granted to imams and muezzins (a religious person who carries out the call to prayer).
Meanwhile, in June, Toufiq launched a support program aimed at improving the socioeconomic status of imams around the country.
