Rabat – Morocco’s King Mohammed VI sent a letter of condolences to the family of late artist Abderrahim Tounsi, known as Abderraouf, who was pronounced dead on Monday morning.

King Mohammed VI received with deep sorrow the sad news of the death of the late Abderrahim Tounsi, the letter says.

The King further expressed his “deep condolences and his sincere feelings of compassion” to the artist’s family. 

Abderrahim Tounsi was “one of the pioneers of theatrical comedy in Morocco, known for his authenticity and creativity,” the King said in the letter.

The monarch added that he remembers the virtues and the creative spirit of the late Abderrahim Tounsi through his Abderraouf character  which marked the peak of the late artist’s career and earned him the admiration of the Moroccan audience. The artist was especially well known for his elegant and refined humorous style.

The beloved Moroccan comedian passed away at age 86 after struggling with illness for years.

Abderrahim’s son, Oussama Tounsi, announced his father’s death on his Facebook account in the early morning on Monday. The Moroccan artist died in his family’s home in Casablanca.

The news sent a wave of sadness among Moroccans, as they mourned the death of one of the country’s most well-known artists.
