Rabat – Agricultural solution provider AgriEdge and Moroccan phosphate giant OCP Africa launched the fourth edition of the Farming Innovation Program on Monday through a virtual conference that had more than 100 participants.
The fourth edition of the program is focused on the use of technology to promote crop protection, and hopes many of the participating projects will benefit from the program.
Participants will be able to benefit from expert knowledge from Morocco’s Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), Bayer, The Meknes National School of Agriculture (ENAM), and the AgriTech Center of Excellence.
In addition, they will also be able to use UM6P’s infrastructure and laboratories. The university boasts a set of experimentation platforms in its Living Labs, which include an experimental farm.
Additionally, participants will be connected with potential customers in the form of the program’s partners, and also get an opportunity to present their solutions to a larger crowd during the 2023 International Agricultural Exhibition in Morocco.
More than 300 participants from 24 African countries have applied to be part of the program, according to its official website.
“This program is an opportunity to create a hub for experience and knowledge exchange, co-creation and co-opetition around technology and crop protection,” the site says.
The themes of the program include using AI for disease and pest prediction, Web and mobile platforms for monitoring and treating plant diseases, and using Tele-Proxi detection to protect plants, among others.
The Farming Innovation Program aims to support startups that use technology to resolve issues in the agricultural sector.
In the context of growing populations and dwindling resources due to climate change and other challenges, local start-ups have recently emerged as a potential solution, especially in Africa which has been home to an entrepreneurship boom.
