Rabat – Morocco midfielder Bilal El Khannouss said the national team learned an important lesson from its difficult 4-2 victory over Haiti in the final group-stage match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Many expected Haiti to be Morocco’s easiest opponent in the group after the Atlas Lions drew 1-1 with Brazil and edged Scotland 1-0 in their first two matches. Haiti had already been eliminated from the tournament before the game, but the Caribbean side proved to be a tough challenge and surprised Morocco by scoring twice.
Speaking after the match, El Khannouss admitted that Morocco lacked focus and intensity during parts of the first half, allowing Haiti to gain confidence and take advantage of defensive mistakes.
“We were not humble enough at certain moments of the game,” he said. “We did not approach every duel, cross, and defensive or attacking action with the intensity required, and Haiti punished us for that.”
The midfielder explained that head coach Mohamed Ouahbi delivered a clear message at halftime, urging the players to compete harder in one-on-one battles and win the ball back more quickly.
Morocco responded strongly after the break to secure a 4-2 victory.
El Khannouss said the team’s strength comes from its belief in the playing system and the collective effort of the squad.
“Every player puts his individual qualities at the service of the team,” he said. “That helped us overcome a difficult match and earn the three points.”
The win allowed Morocco to finish second in Group C with seven points, behind Brazil, which topped the group. Morocco advanced to the knockout stage, while Haiti exited the tournament despite its impressive performance against the Atlas Lions.
El Khannouss stated that the group stage is now over and that the team is fully focused on the knockout rounds.
“We know the next stage is different,” he said. “You either win and continue your journey, or you lose and leave the competition. That’s why we must stay fully focused and prepared.”
