Rabat – Morocco’s embassy in Ankara has said that 34 Moroccans are declared to be missing following the earthquake that hit Turkiye on February 6.
A total of 154 members of the Moroccan community in Turkiye survived the disaster, the embassy said, adding that the number includes 16 Moroccans who sustained injuries during the earthquake. The injured victims left hospitals after they received necessary medical care, the embassy detailed.
In addition, 19 Moroccans were identified to be killed in the devastating earthquake.
The earthquake, which also struck Syria, claimed the lives of 47,000 people in both countries as of February 6.
It also left thousands of others missing, while millions of people were left homeless.
Turkiye announced the majority of deaths with over 41,000 people killed. In Syria, authorities said over 5,800 people died in the earthquake.
The World Health Organization’s Europe director, Hans Kluge, has described the situation as the “worst natural disaster in the region for a century.”
The disaster left over one million people living in tents and temporary shelters. Over 80,000 people are receiving medical care at hospitals in the country.
The earthquake also left over five million people homeless.
On Monday, Turkiye and Syria were also struck with new quakes that killed eight people while injuring many others.
The situation has prompted experts’ concerns as well as solidarity campaigns from many countries. While some countries donated money, others have donated tents to help people who lost their homes find a refuge.
An outpouring of solidarity and supporting messages also followed the aftermath of the devastating disasters.
