Rabat – Moroccan rapper Dizzy DROS went viral with his new song “M3a L3echrane,” amassing nearly one million views on YouTube in just 17 hours.
The music video, full of quick cuts, is stacked with scenes of social commentary on Morocco, particularly aiming at politicians and the government.
The music video depicts politicians at a press conference, with a blue “Angry Birds” logo clearly alluding to Morocco’s ruling party the National Rally of Independents, who have a blue bird as their logo.
Moroccans have been criticizing Aziz Akhannouch’s government over the past year, especially in light of rapidly increasing prices of food and energy.
Several cities, including Tangier and Meknes, witnessed protests over the weekend as the rising inflation continues to overwhelm the populace.
At the same time, calls for the resignation of Akhannouch had been mounting due to what many saw as a lack of responsiveness from the government in addressing the issues.
Even recent promises to reduce prices of goods before the month of Ramadan have been met with skepticism, with recent surveys and reports showing that the rate of trust Moroccans have for the government and political parties is extremely low.
Dizzy DROS’ video touches on the nature of social and media dialogue in Morocco, even borrowing the likeness of Al Jazeera’s logo to depict media debates getting heated and out of control.
The video is also full of imagery of prison and police brutality, taking a shot at how some young people in the country are brought up in conditions that do not enable a good life, and find themselves turning to crime instead.
