Rabat- One year following Rayan’s tragic death – the 5 year-old boy who died after being trapped in a well– his parents welcomed a newborn baby.

Converging news outlets reported that Rayan’s mom Ouassima Kharchich gave birth to a boy whose name is Shajid on Thursday, February 2 at a hospital in Tetouan.

Given that the baby’s birth occurred in the same month that marks the one-year anniversary of Rayan’s death, many people considered the new addition to the family to be a miracle.

‘Yesterday marked Rayan’s tragedy anniversary, and today we had a child. God takes and God gives,” Rayan’s father Khalid Aouram told local media as quoted by French outlet le Parisien.

The world collectively mourned the tragic death of 5 year-old Rayan in 2022.

Rayan was playing outside near Morocco’s Chefchaouen when he fell into a narrow well owned by his father. The boy was trapped for more than four days at a depth of about 32 meters.

Moroccan authorities, medical personnel, and citizens all rushed to the rescue. However, despite several days of rescue and digging efforts, the little boy died on February 5.

The entire world was watching Rayan’s rescue mission in the hopes of a happy ending. The sad story sparked an outpour of support and sympathy in Morocco and around the world.

The young boy became UNICEF’s “new icon of childhood in Morocco,” and will be remembered forever.
