Morocco’s FM Reaffirms Support for Burkina Faso's Political Stability

Rabat – Morocco’s chief diplomat Nasser Bourita has reiterated the North African country’s support for the stability of Burkina Faso.

Speaking earlier today at a press conference following a meeting with the Burkinabe Minister of Foreign Affairs, Olivia Ragnaghnewende Rouamba, Bourita said that Morocco is confident in the Burkinabe people’s ability to preserve their national unity, and stability.

Burkina Faso is going through a period of political turmoil, with attacks by armed insurgent groups claiming many civilian lives over the past years. The landlocked nation experienced two coups in 2022, and it is also facing significant security issues from terrorist groups active in the Sahel Region.

While delivering a statement to the press, Bourita recalled that Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has repeatedly stressed the need to maintain solid relations between the two countries. The long-standing relations between Ouagadougou and Rabat are based on solidarity and fruitful cooperation, Bourita argued.

He highlighted the history of collaboration between the two countries, recalling King Mohammed VI’s instructions to provide medical support to Burkina Faso at the height of the COVID crisis.

Solidarity will always be the “hallmark” of the relationship between the two countries, Bourita said, adding that Morocco is committed to remaining “a loyal friend and a partner in solidarity” to Burkina Faso.

Noting the significance of Rouamba’s visit, he said that it is part of the ongoing collaboration between the two countries.

Bourita also expressed his appreciation for the role played by Burkina Faso within the G5 Sahel in the fight against terrorism in the region, reaffirming Morocco’s commitment to supporting the efforts of Burkina Faso in the fight against terrorism, which is a major threat to the West African country.

Regarding efforts to boost bilateral cooperation between the two countries, the top Moroccan diplomat stressed that there has been a significant increase in the number of scholarships Morocco has granted to Burkina Faso in recent years.
