Rabat – Princess Lalla Meryem, the sister of Morocco’s King Mohammed VI, hosted Queen Maxima of the Netherlands on Wednesday in Rabat. The queen is visiting Morocco as part of her duties as the UN Secretary-General’s special envoy for the promotion of inclusive financial services for development (UNSGSA).
The audience with Princess Lalla Meryem is part of Queen Maxima’s working visit to Morocco that aims to promote financial inclusion.
During her four-day visit to Morocco, the queen is set to examine possible venues to boost financial inclusion by promoting the adoption of fintech.
The visit further aims “to extend support to further advance progress that Morocco has made in financial inclusion in recent years,” the UNSGSA detailed in a statement.

Queen Maxima’s visit will especially focus on helping traditionally underserved groups such as women and small merchants gain access to formal financial services.
She equally looks to promote the importance of inclusive green finance in boosting climate resilience and adapting climate mitigation policies.
On Monday, the queen visited the Moroccan start-up Chari in Casablanca to learn how the company is taking part in the country’s digital transformation and promoting financial inclusion through its services offering.
On the same day, Queen Maxima held a number of other meetings with a fintech association as well as with Bank of Africa Chairman and CEO Othman Benjelloun.
Yesterday, the UNSGSA held another roundtable meeting in Casablanca with private sector operators to discuss business opportunities and ways to boost the adoption of digital payments and fintech solutions.
She also met AXA Assurance Morocco Managing Director, Meryem Chami, and is to hold a meeting with Morocco’s “Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch, Secretary-General of the Government Mohamed El Hajoui, Economy and Finance Minister Nadia Fettah Alaoui, and Industry and Trade Minister Ryad Mezzour,” according to the UNSGSA’s statement.
