The holy month of Ramadan falls on the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. And as the lunar year is shorter than the year in the Gregorian calendar, the first day of the month of Ramadan depends on the crescent moon sighting from the night before.
Ramadan is of immense religious significance to Muslim communities around the world. The month is perceived as a unique opportunity to renew faith and devote more time to prayers, reading the Quran, and undertaking charity work.
Throughout the month, Muslims fast from dusk to dawn and carry out a number of activities.
The month is marked by two voluntary intensive praying sessions before dawn and at night time. The number of worshipers frequenting mosques usually spikes during Ramadan.
Over the years, Ramadan gained cultural significance as well, as the coming of the month is widely celebrated with special foods, clothing, and traditions that vary depending on the culture.
At the end of the month “Eid Al Fitr” is celebrated as a national holiday in all Arab and Muslim-majority countries.
