Rabat – Malaysia announced Thursday, March 23 as the first day of the holy month of Ramadan 2023.
“To Fulfill the royal decree of His Majesty the Yang diertuan Agong, with the consent of the Rulers, the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal declares that the start date of fasting for all states in Malaysia has been set for Thursday, March 23, 2023,” local media quoted Malaysia the Office of the keeper of the Rulers’ Seal as saying.
Many countries announced Thursday as the first day of Ramadan, including Singapore, and Indonesia.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. Throughout the month, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, abstaining from eating and drinking.
Muslims also strengthen their connection with God through increased spiritual activities, including prayers.
During evenings, Muslims gather at mosques to perform extra prayers called Taraweeh.
Ramadan is also the month of celebrating several traditions, including food and culinary art.
Each country has different food and meals to celebrate iftar.
According to Muslim Solo Travel, Babur Lambuk is among the common food served in Malaysia during Ramadan. The meal consists of rice that is cooked with different spices.
Murtabak is also one of the popular foods served during Ramadan. The Murtabak is similar to stuffed msemen in Morocco.
Many countries are still yet to confirm Ramadan’s start date, including Morocco. The Islamic Affairs Ministry called on religious experts to sight the crescent moon for Ramadan this evening.
Ramadan is likely to be on Thursday in the North African country in addition to several other countries like Algeria and Tunisia.
