Rabat – American-Irish automotive supplier Aptiv inaugurated on Saturday a new production plant in Oujda. With the new opening, the company now has seven factories in Morocco.

Located in the Oujda’s industrial zone, the plant will specialize in the assembly of electrical harnesses and is set to generate 3,000 direct jobs, according to converging news reports.

The production site is said to have been designed to be “eco-friendly,” in line with Aptiv’s commitment to reach carbon neutrality by 2040. The production materials and equipment are expected to significantly reduce water and electricity consumption.

The factory is the first car manufacturing supply chain to open in the Oriental region, echoing Morocco’s state strategy to boost industrial activities in the region. Launched on January 24, 2022, the construction reached completion in March 2023.

Commenting on the inauguration, Morocco’s Industry and Trade Minister, Ryad Mezzour said that it “is part of the Royal Initiative for the development of the Oriental region.”

The plant further reflects the region’s ability “to attract global leaders and opens the way to new investments that create wealth and jobs for young people,” Mezzour explained in a statement quoted in media.

On his part, General Manager at Aptiv Morocco, Mohammed Filali stated that the project “shows the confidence that the Aptiv Group has in Morocco and Moroccan talent, thanks in particular to the commitment of our 17,000 employees who work daily to promote the quality and competitiveness of Made in Morocco.”

Aptiv has been present in Morocco since 1999. The company first opened a plant in Tangier and has since opened six other sites, and established a logistics hub, and a development center.
