Rabat – Morocco World News Women’s Award is back for its second edition. This year MWN has decided to extend the list and cover more outstanding women who have made significant contributions to their respective fields.
The awards span a number of fields including politics, activism, science, health, and arts among others. All women chosen for the MWN Women Awards were hand-selected by an independent panel.
After years of activism, the 21st-century world finally recognizes that women’s rights are “smart economics” and that societies can all thrive when no one is left behind. The MWN Women’s Awards captures this principle, as the high-achieving women are success stories for all Moroccans, not just other women.
Morocco has come a long way in its pursuit of social and economic equity, but there is still much to achieve. MWN Women’s Awards aim to value current achievements and inspire further progress.
The country has made significant strides in advocating for women’s rights, with the 2011 family code reform marking a historic milestone. The reforms pushed for multiple legislations that protect women’s rights in the political and economic spheres.
The 2021 elections were a silent celebration of the 2011 reform, as for the first time Morocco had six women ministers appointed in critical decision-making positions, as opposed to prior elections that only included women in what were considered “feminine” roles.
Irrelevant of political affiliation, seeing women undertake positions in economy and finance, development, and energy, ministers have resonated with Morocco and the world at large.
Despite the major leap in legislation, Moroccan women still face a number of challenges in accessing education, healthcare, and the labor market. The country has some of the world’s lowest female labor participation rates at only 20% meaning, only one out of five women eligible to work are actually in the job market.
It is MWN’s hope to continue covering and following women as they support their countries to thrive.
