Rabat – Morocco won a total of 18 medals on the first day of the 7th International Meeting of Para-Athletics Moulay El Hassan, which is taking place in the Moroccan city of Marrakech between March 9 and 11.
The Royal Moroccan Federation of Sports for People with Disabilities indicated on Friday that the 18 medals Moroccan athletes won on Thursday included eight gold medals, 6 silver medals, and 4 silver medals.
The event, which is taking place at the Grand Stadium of Marrakech, has convened more than 400 athletes representing 40 countries from Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
The federation announced that the second day of the sporting event marked the breaking of a world record. Nigeria’s Nwachukwu Goodness Chiemerie set a new world record in the women’s shot put F42 category, which includes athletes whose movement is moderately affected in one leg.
The ongoing Marrakech 2023 World Para Athletics Grand Prix comes days after the Dubai Grand Prix, which saw the participation of 441 athletes from across 46 countries. Meanwhile, the 2023 Tunis World Para Athletics Grand Prix took place in early February.
“Attention turns to the third Grand Prix of the season this week, as Marrakech plays host to the latest World Para Athletics meeting,” said the International Paralympic Committee in a statement.
“We know the hosts will be confident, with a trio of Tokyo gold medallists included in their squad,” added the statement.
After Tunis, Dubai, and Marrakech, the 2023 Grand Prix will head next to the “beautiful sights of Monterrey” in Mexico between April 27 and 29, said the committee.
