Rabat – Former Moroccan footballer Mehdi Benatia has suggested that fellow countryman Sofyan Amrabat would be a good fit to play for Italian club Juventus.
Speaking to Italian football news site Calcio Mercato, Benatia praised Amrabat’s performances.
“Is he Juve material? He has shown his value at the World Cup, and with Fiorentina,” Benatia said earlier this week. “He is a player who gives you strength and quality in the midfield. Yes, he could be a Juve player.”
In addition to being one of the most important players for Italian club Fiorentina recently, Amrabat was also vital for Morocco’s historic run to the 2022 World Cup semi-finals.
The player helped the Moroccan team despite suffering from injuries throughout the tournament, with outstanding defensive performances against Spain and France garnering attention.
Since the tournament, the Moroccan midfielder has been on the radar of many top European clubs including FC Barcelona, Chelsea, and Atletico Madrid.
The footballer was close to joining Barcelona during the last day of the January transfer window, but negotiations broke down as the Spanish club could not meet Fiorentina’s demands.
Chelsea was also reportedly unwilling to pay the eight-figure sum demanded by the Italian club for the player’s immediate permanent transfer. Both Chelsea and Barcelona were only looking to get the player on a loan deal until the season’s end.
Since the January window ended, reports have claimed that FC Barcelona are maintaining their interest with ambitions to sign the midfielder in the summer, although the club’s precarious finances and Spain’s financial fair play rules might stand in the way of the deal.
Juventus could similarly have a hard time signing the Moroccan due to finances. The club was hit with a 15-point deduction in January, as well as fines for breaking financial rules.
