Marrakech-Menara Airport Registers 113% Post-COVID Recovery Rate

Rabat – The Marrakech-Menara International Airport welcomed over 1.7 million passengers in the first quarter of 2023, marking a recovery rate of 113% compared to the same period in 2019.

Figures released by Morocco’s National Airport Office (ONDA) show that the Marrakech airport welcomed over 640,000 passengers during the month of March alone, compared to 580,000 during the same period in 2019.

The number signifies a 111% recovery rate, said the ONDA in its latest report on commercial air traffic.

During the first quarter of 2023, Morocco’s airports recorded a commercial traffic volume of nearly 6 million, an increase of 5% compared to 2019.

The report also shows a recovery rate of 96% for airport movements, with over 46,000 recorded across Morocco.

Airport movements refer to instances of takeoffs and landings of aircraft at an airport. The Marrakech-Menara Airport contributed 25% of that traffic.

Morocco’s tourism and transport sectors have both shown steady growth and recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic after it massively affected both sectors.

One of the North African country’s most important sectors, tourism revenues hit over $8 billion in 2022, with a recovery rate of 112% compared to 2019.

The pandemic had massively restricted movement in and out of Morocco with travelers either being barred from entering or having to overcome restrictions and procedures relating to hygiene and safety to be allowed into Morocco.
