Rabat – The Muslim community in Australia is set to celebrate Eid Al Fitr 2023 on Saturday, April 22, according to a statement from the Australian National Imams Council.
“The Australian Fatwa Council is pleased to announce to the Australian Muslim community the following: Friday, 21st of April 2023, will be the last day of the Month of Ramadan 1444AH,” the statement said.
The statement added that Eid Al Fitr will be on Saturday, April 22, which also marks the beginning of the month of Shawwal 1444AH.
Eid Al Fitr is a religious holiday marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan. The day is celebrated as a national holiday in all Arab countries and Muslim-majority countries.
The exact day of Eid Al Fitr coincides with a different date on the Gregorian calendar each year as Islamic holidays follow the lunar calendar. The day of Eid Al Fitr can only be confirmed after the sighting of the moon the day before.
The occasion is celebrated in different forms across the world depending on the culture. However, all Muslims unite in performing a special Eid prayer on the morning of Eid Al Fitr and in donating money as part of a practice known as “Zakat Al Fitr.”
