Rabat – Morocco has exported 20,000 tonnes of cucumbers to foreign markets in 2022.

According to the agriculture-focused website, EastFruit, the number of exported cucumbers from Morocco to foreign markets has more than tripled over the past five years.

Morocco is following a similar trend this year despite pressure to reduce exports due to inflation and high prices of vegetables and fruits in the local market.

“The country is not slowing down the growth rate of foreign trade in greenhouse cucumbers, but rather the opposite,” EastFruit said. “The export volume of Moroccan greenhouse cucumbers only in January 2023 amounted to 3 450 tonnes,” EastFruit said.

The EU remains among the top clients receiving Moroccan cucumbers.

Moroccan producers exported 17,100 tonnes of greenhouse cucumbers to the EU and the UK in 2022.

The number represents a significant change in the past five years. In 2017, Morocco exported only 3,800 tonnes of cucumbers to EU markets. The number, however, remained higher than exports to African countries.

“In 2017, 60% of sales were made to European countries, and the rest was exported to African countries.”

However, exports to African countries “developed slowly” as they increased by 15% more compared to 2017.

Within the EU market, Spain tops the list of importers of Moroccan cucumbers, with over half of the export volume to the EU.

Morocco remains one of the key exporters of vegetables and fruits to international markets. However, demands to halt exports increased amid inflation and soaring prices of food products, affecting Moroccan citizens’ purchasing power.
