Rabat – On the official twitter account of Kuwait News on Saturday, Fedda introduced herself in standard Arabic, “I’m Fedda, the first anchorwoman in Kuwait who works with artificial intelligence at Kuwait News. What kind of news do you like best? Let’s have your opinions.”
Kuwait News, which is an affiliate of Kuwait Times, the Gulf’s first English-language daily founded in 1961, is testing the potential of artificial intelligence to provide “new and innovative content,” Deputy Editor In Chief at Kuwait Times & Kuwait News Abdullah Boftain told AFP.
According to him, Fedda may even adopt the Kuwaiti dialect in the future.
Explaining her name’s origin, Boftain said, “Feddais a popular ancient Kuwaiti name that refers to silver, the metal. We always imagine robots in silver and metal, so we combined the two.”
When asked about her physical appearance, being blond with light eyes, he said that it reflected the diversity of the population in a country composed of Kuwaitis and expatriates, and rich in oil. “Fedda represents everyone,” he added.
The new AI anchor, which has had a lot of interaction on social media, has received mixed reactions.
“The technology used is not advanced. What you have done is only read a written text from (Fedda) instead of a listening activity. Development is conversing with the broadcaster and requesting information and news from her, as is the case with ChatGPT,” one Twitter user wrote.
Another commented, “It needs more development so as to sound more natural than only a human robot speaking.”
