Rabat – The UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) re-elected Morocco on Wednesday in New York to the UN’s commission on narcotic drugs.
The kingdom’s re-election is for a four-year mandate starting on January 1, 2024. Morocco currently holds a seat on this Vienna-headquartered commission, where the North African country is the voice of a group of African countries.
Morocco’s third consecutive re-election to this commission comes as a nod to the country’s pioneering role in and commitment to regional and international efforts toward combating the global drug problem in all its dimensions and ramifications.
By making available its rich, widely acknowledged experience in the fight against the traffic and use of illicit drugs, Morocco seeks to promote international and regional cooperation with an eye to confronting the problem of drugs.
Another factor in this re-election is Morocco’s newfound stance regarding the legal, medical, cosmetic, and industrial uses of cannabis.
The commission on narcotic drugs is the central UN board for decision-making on drugs. Its tasks include analyzing the drug situation in the world by examining the interrelated issues of drug abuse prevention, rehabilitation of drug users, and the supply and trafficking of illicit drugs.
In addition, the commission tackles the monitoring and implementation of international drug control treaties; it is equally tasked with taking decisions on all issues related to the control of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.
The commission further works to promote initiatives at the national, regional, and international scales. In this role, it accelerates the implementation of commitments aimed at addressing and combating the world’s struggle with illicit drug trafficking and consumption.
