Rabat – Videos and pictures documenting horrific attacks by Israeli troops against Palestinians at the Al-Aqsa mosque have sparked widespread outrage in the face of the international community’s inaction to address what many observers have described as reprehensible behavior by Israeli forces.
Tor Wennesland, UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, is among the latest officials to have commented on and denounced Israel’s violent approaches against Palestinians.
“I am appalled by the images of violence inside the al-Qibli mosque. I am disturbed by the apparent beating of Palestinians by Israeli security forces and a large number of arrests,” he said.
That such scenes of Israeli forces violently beating Palestinian worshippers come in the midst of Ramadan, a special and holy month for Muslims, has added fuel to the fire and led many observers to describe the behavior of Israeli forces as appalling and provocative.
“This holy period and places of worship should be for safe and peaceful religious reflection,” the UN coordinator said.
A few days after a Palestinian man was killed outside Al-Aqsa, Israeli troops stormed the mosque in Jerusalem and arrested over 350 people.
Videos and graphic visuals have documented violent and frightening scenes inside the mosque, where Israeli troops used their batons to beat unarmed worshippers.
Israeli security services claimed that some of their elements entered the mosque only after “several law-breaking youths and masked agitators brought into the mosque fireworks, sticks, and stones.”
At least 12 people suffered injuries during Israeli troops’ beating spree around the mosque, and at least three of the people who sustained injuries were taken to the hospital.
This violent storming of Al-Aqsa is the latest of a series of similar incidents that have long sparked worldwide outrage amid the international community’s reluctance or failure to take adequate measures against Israel.
Over the past days, several countries have condemned Israel’s violent storming of the Al-Aqsa, including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Qatar, Egypt, and Morocco.
Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced the Israeli forces’ attack on and terrorization of worshipers during the holy month.
“The Kingdom of Morocco, whose Sovereign HM King Mohammed VI chairs the Al Quds Committee, stresses the need to respect the legal, religious, and historical status of Al Quds and the Holy Places and to avoid all practices and violations that are likely to destroy all chances for peace in the region,” the statement said.
