Rabat – Police in the northern Moroccan town of Asilah opened on Thursday an investigation to elucidate the circumstances of an aborted international drug trafficking attempt which resulted in the seizure of a considerable quantity of 900 kg of Chira (cannabis resin), a security source said.
Launched under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office and in coordination with elements of the Coast Guard of the Royal Armed Forces, this operation resulted in the seizure of 30 bales of Chira, the same source specified.
Investigations are ongoing to shed more light on this case and to arrest all those involved in this criminal activity.
The last time the police thwarted a similar operation in Asilah was in 2021 when they seized 4 tonnes of cannabis resin.
Numerous other attempts of drug trafficking have been foiled in different regions of Morocco in recent months. Earlier this month, police seized 2.4 tonnes of cannabis in Casablanca.
The police arrested the forty year-old suspect in collaboration with security services from the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST).
A day later, the national police department (DGSN) detected the shipment of five tonnes of drugs at the port of Tangier Med in a cargo truck.
Morocco currently holds a seat on the UN’s commission on narcotic drugs, while the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) recently re-elected Morocco to the UN’s commission in New York.
This re-election was a nod to Morocco’s efforts towards combating the global drug problem and its newfound stance regarding the legal, medical, cosmetic, and industrial uses of cannabis.
