Rabat – Spanish railway operators are showing interest in Morocco’s railway sector, particularly the country’s high speed rail network known as TGV or Al Boraq.
Spanish news outlet La Informacion said that several railway companies and as well as engineering experts have a “new preferential objective: the new high speed rail network in Morocco.”
The interest stems from Morocco’s “megaplan” to expand its railway lines.
“Large Spanish companies have begun to take positions and activate their machinery” for Rabat’s plan, the news outlet said, recalling that the challenge is not easy with the presence of French operators in the market.
“France … was already in charge of launching the first-high speed line in the country seven years ago, through Alstom and the French government and financial institutions,” La Informacion explained.
Spain however, is planning to also join the market, with talks between Rabat and Madrid intensifying on the matter.
The talks, according to La Informacion, intensified during the Spanish-Moroccan High-Level Meeting held in February.
According to La Informacion, the Spanish Ministry of Transport communicated the country’s interest in Morocco’s railway project during the meeting, conveying that several Spanish companies were interested in Morocco’s various infrastructure projects.
The outlet also recalled the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Spanish and Moroccan ministries of transport, which would open a door to explore several cooperation areas, particularly railway as Rabat plans major reforms to improve its railways.
The railway infrastructure makes Morocco an attractive market to explore for Spanish companies, who have been “increasing their presence in the country,” the news outlet added.
Morocco’s high-speed railway currently ranks as the world’s 12th best, according to Omio.
Morocco introduced Al Boraq, the first high-speed railway in Africa in 2018.
The rail line connects the country’s northern city of Tangier with Rabat, Casablanca, and Kenitra.
Morocco seeks to expand the high-speed rail system to reach more regions and cities, including Marrakech, Agadir, and the southern provinces.
