Rabat – Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology has forecast a mix of hot weather, thunderstorms, and strong winds across several parts of the country from Monday through Wednesday, according to a new orange-level weather alert.
The agency said hot conditions will affect many areas on Monday, with temperatures expected to range between 39°C and 42°C in regions including Taza, Taounate, Khemisset, Khenifra, Fquih Ben Salah, Khouribga, and Settat.
A longer heatwave is also expected from Monday to Wednesday, with temperatures rising between 39°C and 44°C in eastern and southern provinces such as Errachidia, Jerada, Taourirt, Figuig, Zagora, Tata, Boujdour, Oued Ed-Dahab, Aousserd, Guercif, Boulemane, Assa-Zag, and Es-Smara.
Alongside the heat, unstable weather conditions are expected in some mountainous areas. The meteorological office warned of thunderstorms on Monday between 2 p.m. and 11 p.m., with rainfall of 20-30 millimeters. These storms may also bring hail and strong wind gusts in Khenifra, Ifrane, and Sefrou.
Generally hot to relatively hot conditions are expected to continue in the southeast, the eastern regions, and inland southern provinces over the coming days. Mountain areas and nearby regions may see more unstable weather, with scattered thunderstorms developing over the Atlas and Rif mountains.
The weather service also warned of moderate to strong wind gusts, especially in eastern and southern regions, which may cause dust and reduced visibility on roads.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, similar conditions are expected to continue, with thunderstorms likely over parts of the Middle and High Atlas, as well as the eastern regions. Coastal areas may also see low clouds and local fog during the night and morning, which will gradually clear during the day.
Authorities have advised the public to avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, drink plenty of water, and take precautions during thunderstorms, especially in mountainous areas and near valleys.
The extreme heat and unstable weather are expected to continue affecting parts of Morocco until the end of the week.
